What is Bone Grafting in Dentistry?

Nov 21, 2018

Bone grafting is a standard procedure in dentistry. While there are other cosmetic procedures such as implants and crown restorations, bone grafting seeks to restore the bone overall bone structure. If your dentist recommends a bone graft there is no reason to be afraid – think of it as a preventative measure for your cosmetic health.

When Is Bone Grafting Necessary

Bone grafting involves the fortification of the bone structures in the body. In dentistry, however, the procedure is used to reinforce the installments of dental implants. If the structural integrity of the bones in your mouth isn’t strong enough, it’s possible for dental implants to lose their placing in the socket.

How Will I Know If Bone Grafting Is Needed?

Your dentist will take a detailed X-Ray of your mouth which will determine the condition of your bone structure. During this X-Ray, our dentist near you, will inform you of details such as bone and mass density. Depending on these variables you’ll be instructed or in most cases recommended to get a bone graft.

Different Bone Grafting Techniques

The standard bone grafting technique involves the transplantation of bone tissue. The transplantation provides a solid framework for the graft while strengthening the base. The two types of bone grafts are the following:

Allograft – The allograft used a bone from a donor often one that is deceased and had previously agreed to transplantation upon death. Areas involved in allografting include the hip, knee or long bones found in the arms and legs.

Autograft – Autograft involves the removal of bones inside your own body.

Is Bone Grafting Safe?

Bone grafting is relatively safe if done correctly and performed with professional care. However, there are few risks associated with bone grafting.

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Nerve Injury

Although these risks are present, seeing a registered doctor can assess and minimize any underlying factors that can increase the probability of these risks.
